Supreme Court Upholds Party Membership Register Requirements

On September 24, 2026, the Supreme Court delivered judgment in INEC v. Zenith Labour Party, upholding Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026. The judgment confirms that political parties must submit their digital membership registers to INEC at least 21 days before primaries, congresses and conventions, and that only members on the submitted register may vote or be voted for. Following the judgment, the APC, in a letter dated October 9, 2026 signed by National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and National Secretary Sen. Ajibola Basiru, urged INEC to enforce the ruling across all parties ahead of the 2027 general election.
